Noni knowledge

So what exactly is Noni?

Morinda citrifolia — a fruit with over 3.000 years of history in Polynesia, an unmistakable character and a long journey all the way to Vorarlberg. Here’s everything you should know about it.

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia)
The botany

A fruit that carries history.

Noni belongs to the madder family (Rubiaceae) and is one of the most important plants of the Polynesian tradition. Its native range stretches from India across South-East Asia to the Pacific islands — today it feels most at home around Tahiti.

Depending on the region, it’s called Noni, Nonu or Indian Mulberry. When ripe, the fruit is pale and almost translucent — and develops its famous, intense scent.

Noni tree in the tropics
The tree

Flower, unripe and ripe fruit — all at once.

The Noni tree bears fruit all year round. On a single branch you’ll often find flower, green and ripe fruit side by side — it knows no season. Up to eight metres tall, with large glossy leaves, it grows on coasts, in lava fields and at the forest edges of Polynesia.

The journey

From South-East Asia across the Pacific.

The story of Noni is a story of seafaring. Thousands of years ago, Polynesian navigators carried the plant from island to island on their outrigger canoes — as one of the „canoe plants” that were an integral part of every settlement. That’s how Morinda citrifolia travelled from South-East Asia all the way to Hawaii, Tahiti and the most remote corners of eastern Polynesia.

over 3.000 years agoPolynesian navigators bring Noni as a „canoe plant” across the Pacific — it’s part of the basic equipment of every new island.
CenturiesFirmly rooted in Polynesia and South-East Asia: fruit, leaves and seeds each have their place in island daily life.
since the 1950sModern science begins to study Morinda citrifolia systematically — increasing sharply from the 1990s.
since 2003Noni juice is approved in the EU as a novel food (Novel Food) — with high requirements for quality, purity and safety.
The whole plant

Not just the fruit counted.

In the Polynesian tradition, the entire Noni plant was used — each part had its task. That’s what makes it, to this day, one of the most versatile plants of the islands.

🍈

The fruit

The centrepiece — fermented into purée and juice. When ripe it’s pale, soft and intense in scent.

🌿

The leaves

Large, glossy, leathery — traditionally used for wrapping and for infusions.

🌱

The seeds

Ensure its spread — the fruit floats and germinates even after a long journey at sea.

🌳

Bark & roots

Provided dyes. Important: this is where the anthraquinones sit — they’re not detectable in the fruit itself. We process only the ripe fruit.

The tradition

For centuries part of Polynesia.

One thing the juice never was: an indulgence. Traditionally it was drunk above all when it really mattered — its taste and smell are too intense to drink for pleasure. That’s exactly why we round off our NONI Original with organic direct juices, instead of hiding its character.

89–90 %Water — the ripe fruit is juicy and heavy
3–25 mgnatural vitamin C per 100 g of raw fruit
K · Ca · MgPotassium, calcium and magnesium naturally present
150+natural constituents — many of them still being researched
Wild growth instead of plantation

Harvested, when the fruit is ripe.

Our Noni grows wild in the untouched nature of Polynesia — no synthetic fertiliser, no pesticides, no plantation schedule. It’s harvested by hand: only fully ripe, carefully selected fruit. That’s more demanding than mechanised cultivation, but it secures the quality and a fair income for the local families on site.

This care is the reason why high-quality Noni products have their price — and why „100 % juice” isn’t always the same as „100 % juice”.

The approval

Tested and approved in the EU.

Noni juice is approved in the European Union as a novel food (Novel Food) — based on a scientific safety assessment by the EU Commission (2002/2003); the purée followed in 2010. The anthraquinones occasionally mentioned in the debate are not present in the fruit — only in roots and bark, which play no role in our products.

From fruit to bottle

Fermented, matured, rounded off.

After the hand harvest, the ripe fruit is processed into purée and fermented traditionally — a process that above all takes time, not accelerants. In Vorarlberg the purée is rounded off with organic direct juices of red grape, pomegranate and blueberry, lab-tested and bottled.

Facts instead of myths

What’s true — and what isn’t.

Few fruits are surrounded by so many stories. We stick to what can be proven.

„Noni is a miracle cure.”No. Noni is a food, not a remedy — it doesn’t replace any medical treatment. We make no healing promises, and the product pages show only EU-authorised statements.
„Noni works instantly.”Tradition and experience speak of routine, not of instant effects. As with any ritual, it’s the consistency over weeks that counts.
„Noni is toxic or has strong side effects.”Noni juice is classified in the EU as a safe food (Novel Food). Side effects are rare and mild.
„The taste makes the fruit inedible.”Neat, it’s intense and tart — a sign of its concentration. Rounded off with direct berry juices, it becomes a distinctive, fruity drink.
The NUI NONI family

The family with which it all began.

In the beginning there was a fruit. NUI began with the NUI NONI Original — fermented organic Noni purée from Tahiti, rounded off with three organic direct juices. From this one juice a whole family grew over the years.

Because the same fruit fits into many everyday lives: as juice for the morning and evening ritual, as a shot for on the go, as purée for the kitchen, as vinegar for refining. One fruit — many formats, many rituals.

And the family keeps growing. The Noni fruit brought into the form that suits your day — as powder for active days, as a capsule for a steady rhythm, as a spray and as care for the outside.
